A lovely place in the heart of Znojmo

Relaxation in an ambience full of living history

The Althanský Palác stands on the Upper Square, in the very centre of Znojmo, on the way to Znojmo Castle. From its terrace there is a magnificent view of the Town Hall Tower and St. Nicolas Church. On a clear day, the Alpine peaks appear on the horizon. Stay with us and feel the atmosphere of past centuries.

This early-Baroque town palace was built by Count Maximilian Lawrence in 1666–74 on the site of two medieval burgher houses on the Upper Square. Its artistically valuable façade from the late 17th century is marked by a tall order of Corinthian pilasters.

At the turn of 1631 and 1632, Albrecht von Wallenstein dwelt in this palace. It is said he had an astrological observatory built on the roof, where the Italian astrologer Seni tried to read his destiny from the stars.

In 1723, Emperor Charles VI stayed here with his daughter Maria Theresa on their way to the coronation in Prague and back. The palace was later taken by the Znojmo marshal Michal Ehrenreich, Earl of Althan, after whom it is named.

We reconstructed the building without subsidies and from Czech money. By staying at the Althanský Palác, you help save this unique cultural monument.

We recommend

Activities in Znojmo and surroundings

Znojmo is an ideal starting point for trips into the Dyje valley, to the vineyards and across the border into Austria.

A rock-cut passage of the Znojmo underground, a figure with a torch

The Znojmo Catacombs

In the old town — a few minutes on foot

Some twenty-seven kilometres of passages run beneath the town, dug out by burghers over centuries — cellars, escape routes, ingenious traps. It stays around ten degrees down there, which makes it as good a refuge in the rain as in high summer. Adrenaline routes can be booked for anyone wanting more than the standard tour.

The suspension footbridge over the Dyje at the Šobes vineyard

The Šobes vineyard

≈ 12 km — on foot or by bike only

Šobes sits in a bend of the Dyje in the middle of the national park and counts among the best-sited vineyards in Europe — bare rock, the river on three sides and a south-facing slope above it. You can only reach it on foot or by bike, across a suspension bridge and through the forest. In season a tasting stand waits right among the vines.

Podyjí National Park

Podyjí National Park

Begins at the edge of Znojmo

The smallest Czech national park begins at the edge of Znojmo and is inseparable from its river — incised meanders, rock walls, steppe and heath all in one place. Four decades as a sealed border zone paradoxically saved its nature. At the end of summer the Havranice heath turns purple and the park looks like somewhere else entirely.
